Bum-bags, Scrunchies and Jelly Sandals – the 90’s Haven’t Gone Away, You Know…

by Leah Johnston

History has a tendency of repeating itself when it comes to fashion trends, and this year the nineties babies are getting a blast from the past. As a decade of experimentation in technology, fashion and music, the nineties were highly influential on our popular culture. Sporting the likes of the ‘Spice Girls’, ‘Britney Spears’ (and how could we forget Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’), it really was a decade to be remembered. Some would say most predominantly for some brave and interesting fashion choices, and lucky (or unlucky) for us, they’re coming back!

The Choker

This statement 90’s piece has kicked the long necklace off the neck-ware throne, with the likes of Kylie Jenner, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian all exhibiting this look on their Instagram pages. Find yours for as little as £2.99 in stores such as New Look, Topshop or online retailer Misguided.

Dungarees/Pinafore Dress

Give your look a ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ feel with this 90s denim look. The ‘pinafore’ style is a new take on the full leg dungaree, and gives a cute preppy look to any outfit. Team with a plain tee and plimsolls for the ultimate effortless summer style.

The Bomber Jacket

Originally created for military pilots, this jacket has become a key style brought back from the 90’s this season. Easy to wear with both casual and dressy outfits, it’s a great piece for your wardrobe. Grab yours at http://www.prettylittlething.com for just £25!

The Jelly Sandal

Everyone’s favourite childhood summer shoe – the jelly sandal has made its comeback in recent years. Adding a retro touch to your summer wardrobe, choose from glitter sandals (just like the ones you had when you were five), blocked heels, or gladiator styles.

The Bumbag

A festival must this season -the bumbag has well and truly marked its territory. Not only is it a safe and ‘hands free’ form of carrying your valuables, it’s a great concealer of any unwanted lumps or bumps around the midriff. All whilst looking very festival-chic and on trend! Complete your boho look by teaming this tassled bumbag with denim shorts, khaki wellies, and a floaty crop top.

The Crop Top

As a key piece in most girls’ wardrobes this year, the crop top has become increasingly popular in all seasons. Bare midriffs were all the craze of the 90s, but our ‘Teenies’ twist is teamed with high-waisted bottoms, rather than the low-rise jeans of the 90s(just think Christina Aguilera’s ‘Dirty’, if you can bare to).

The ultimate retro hair accessory this summer. With celebs such as Madonna sporting the look in the 90s, and Selena Gomez trying out the look this year, its safe to say the cute hairpiece is back! Grab yours for festival season from as little as £3.
