As the Student Union elections for 2021 approach, on Monday 1st March 2021, The Gown is featuring candidates who are running for student office.
As The Gown Editor, I am pleased to introduce Emma Murphy, who is hoping to be the next Education Officer for the next 2021-2022 academic term.
Hi! My name is Emma Murphy, and I am campaigning to be your Education Officer.
I’m a third year English Student and I am currently acting as a School Representative for Arts, English and Languages as well as the Co-Lead Peer Mentor for my school. Last year I was also President of the English Society, after being an associate member in first year.

I have really enjoyed all my experiences at Queen’s, and they have been instrumental in why I have chosen to run. The Student’s Union has played an element in every year of my degree, and I would love to play a bigger role in helping other students through the Full-Time role of Education Officer.
My main points in my manifesto cover blended learning, rights for student workers, creating a better community for students, and to improve mental health and employability services for students.
There are so many areas affecting education, but I believe working on these key areas will create tangible change for all students at QUB.
If you want to find out more, my social media is @emmaforeducation on Facebook and Tiktok and @emmaforeducationqub on Instagram! If you want your voice heard on the issues that matter to you then vote Emma for Education!
The Gown invites all candidates standing for election this year to contact us in order to be given a platform to unveil their campaign objectives and pledges. Given the current public health circumstances, in which we all find ourselves, it is these times that homegrown, student-led societies, such as The Gown, are an invaluable tool for spreading the student voice.
