Special Meeting of SU Council to be held to consider impact of cuts

By the Gown team, @thegownqub

Last month The Gown revealed via a leaked email, that the SU leadership are considering five options to deal with the cuts that will be implemented by the University for the academic year 2015-2016.

The most drastic of these proposals include axing up to two Student Officers.

The email was sent to all members of the Officer Review group ahead of a meeting on the last day of term, Friday 19th December.

It was intended that a final decision would be made at this meeting, meaning SU Council would not be consulted at all. However, quorum was not reached at this meeting, with not enough members present in order to make a binding decision.

It appears that the SU leadership is now keen to save some face, by holding a Special Meeting of SU Council on Monday 2 February 2015 at 6.00 pm in The Space, Level 1, Students’ Union.

SU Councillors were informed this morning (Monday 5 January) by Dominic Doherty, deputy director of QUBSU about the Special Meeting.

An email states the meeting’s purpose is “to consider the implications of confirmed Students’ Union funding cutbacks for the 2015-16 financial year, with particular regard to a confirmed reduction in the funding that is made available to support payment of stipends to the team of elected student officers.  The Officer Review Group will present some options at the Special Meeting for possible action in this area.  Please note that no other business will be considered at this Meeting.”
